Our Favorite Beaches

South Maui has plenty of beautiful beach options! For a laid-back beach day, you can’t go wrong with Kamaole I, II, and III in Kihei—each offers soft sand, calm water, and beautiful views. For a more expansive and secluded vibe, head to Makena Beach (aka Big Beach) for a true postcard moment. If you're looking for a resort-style beach, walk through the Grand Wailea to access the public Wailea Beach.

Whale Watching

During February, you're in for a treat—Maui is one of the best spots in the world for whale watching. You can often catch these majestic creatures breaching right from the shore. No binoculars required! There are also plenty of tours if you want to take a boat ride.

Hawaiian Luaus

Experience Hawaiian culture through music, dance, and a feast under the stars. We recommend the renowned Old Lahaina Luau for a traditional experience, or if you want to stay close to home base, check out the cozy South Maui Gardens Luau in Kihei for something more low-key and local.

Shopping in Wailea & Kāʻanapali

Whether you're on the hunt for souvenirs or just want to browse in paradise, The Shops at Wailea are a great nearby option—with everything from local boutiques to luxury stores. Locals tip: they offer free weekly cultural activities like polynesian shows, coconut husking, lei po'o making, and ukulele lessons! See events.

If you’re up for a scenic day trip to the west side, Whalers Village in Kāʻanapali is another top spot with great shopping, beachside restaurants, and ocean views worth the drive. They have a variety of events too!

Snorkeling

You can rent snorkel gear from many places on island, and bring them to local beaches. Visit Turtle Town (aka Makena Landing), for some of the island’s best spots to swim in clear waters and maybe spot a sea turtle. If you want to venture out further, Molokini Crater is a great choice for South Maui outings.

Scuba Diving

Whether you're certified or trying it for the first time, there are awesome dive tours that’ll take you to beautiful places. We got certified at Maui Diving in Kihei. Molokini Crater is a top spot to check out! Most tours leave from Ma'alaea Harbor, but there are some that leave from Kihei if you want to save yourself the drive!

Road to Hāna

It’s a long, winding drive—but the waterfalls, roadside banana bread, botanical garden, lava tubes, and black sand beaches make it more than worth it. Leave early in the morning, take your time, and soak it all in. Don't forget to download OFFLINE Google Maps—there's no reception once you start the road.

Haleakalā Summit

Watching the sunrise or sunset from a 10,000 foot volcano feels a little like another planet. If you plan on going for sunrise, reserve your spot online 2 days before (slots open up at 7am). If not, no worries, go anytime during the day! Definitely bring a jacket—it gets cold up there in the clouds.

ʻĪao Valley State Park

An easy, scenic hike with lush views and a peaceful vibe—great for a slower-paced adventure close to town. Don't forget to book a reservation to access the park. This place reminds us of El Yunque in PR!

Nākālele Blowhole

Located on Maui’s rugged northwest coast, this natural ocean geyser shoots water high into the air as waves crash into a lava rock tube. It’s a short, rocky walk to get there—just be sure to keep a safe distance and wear sturdy shoes. The coastal views are stunning, and there’s even a spot nearby known as the “Heart Rock” if you’re feeling romantic. Locals tip: support local businesses and stop by Lahaina for lunch or dinner on the way back! We recommend checking out Aloha Mixed Plate.

Maui Tropical Plantation

A beautiful, easygoing spot in central Maui with tram tours, gardens, and a picturesque lagoon. You can grab dinner at Cafe O'Lei at the plantation (a fave!), shop local goods, or pick up fresh produce grown right on site. It’s a great way to experience the island’s agricultural side without straying too far.

Maui Ku'ia Chocolate Estate

Chocolate lovers, this one’s for you. Take a tree-to-bar chocolate tour of this Lahaina-based estate and taste handcrafted Maui-grown chocolate with views of the ocean and mountains. Bonus: all profits support local Maui charities.

Maui Gold Pineapple Farm

Take a guided tour through the iconic pineapple fields in Haliʻimaile and learn how Maui’s sweetest fruit is grown, harvested, and—best of all—tasted. You’ll leave with a whole pineapple and a new appreciation for the gold standard of tropical fruit.

Hali'imaile Distillery Tour & Tasting Room

Upcountry vibes meet award-winning spirits at this local distillery tucked into a former pineapple plantation. Learn how they craft vodka, whiskey, and rum from scratch—then stick around for a tasting flight and a stroll through charming Haliʻimaile town. This is right across the street from the Maui Gold Pineapple Tour!

Ocean Vodka Organic Farm & Distillery

This eco-conscious farm and distillery in Kula offers sweeping views and small-batch vodka made from organic sugar cane and deep ocean mineral water. It's a chill spot to sip, learn, and enjoy the scenery. Stay a while for live music at sunset!

Maui Wine

Up in ʻUlupalakua, MauiWine is a great excuse for a scenic drive. You can try their lineup of estate and pineapple wines, stroll the historic grounds, and relax with a glass under the shade of giant trees. Low-key and lovely—perfect for a mellow afternoon after visiting Haleakalā.

South Maui Gardens

Tucked away in Kihei, South Maui Gardens is a relaxed outdoor space filled with lush greenery, rotating food trucks, and a mix of local vendors. It’s a great spot to grab a casual lunch (or dinner!), hang out under the palm trees by the coffee shops, or catch one of their community events—think live music, night markets, and weekly luaus. A local favorite with good vibes all around.

Maui Brewing Co

Hawaiʻi’s largest craft brewery started right here in Kihei. The vibe is casual and fun—with great beer flights, local-style pub food, and often live music or trivia nights. A great place to kick back and feel part of the neighborhood.

Farmers Markets

For fresh fruit, baked goods, and handmade local items, swing by one of the many farmers markets around the island. The Wailea Village farmers market is worth a stop. Come hungry!

Dog on Demand through Maui Humane Society

If you’re missing your dog (or just love animals), this program lets you "check out" a shelter dog for a day of adventure—beach walks, hikes, or just cruising around town. It’s a fun, fulfilling way to give back and make a furry friend while you’re here.

Visit Paia

This quirky surf town on the North Shore has a mix of boutiques, art galleries, juice bars, and amazing food. It’s got a laid-back, boho vibe with plenty to explore. Great for a half-day stroll, people-watching, and soaking up local color.
